The KA Planning & Conservation Committee meeting were pleased to welcome representatives from Imperial College's Urban Wildlife team and Tiva Montalbano from South Ken Zen+ ("SKZ+"), who presented an inspiring initiative to green our neighbourhood from the ground up – or rather, from the window box up.
The project, supported by the Knightsbridge Association, encourages local residents to transform their own curtilage spaces – including window boxes, terraces, and roof gardens – into vibrant, climate-resilient habitats that also benefit pollinators. This is a practical and personal way we can each help increase biodiversity and greenery in our urban environment.
The team shared creative examples of their previous work, including an educational board game and a “seed bombing” project developed with students from Imperial, both previously showcased at local events. Their new project includes a beautifully designed decision tree diagram (see download button) to help residents choose the right plants for their space based on sunlight, water availability, and required maintenance.
We hope many of you will be inspired to take part in this positive, practical project for our community and our climate.
